Summer Hill Complex
Overview
Established by Ronald Johnson in 1889, Summer Hill School was a wood framed Rosenwald
structure of white clapboard with only a few rooms and opened its doors with only 55 students from
grades 1 - 8. Today it serves as a non-profit organization that has a museum, though its major focus
is on programming, projects and festivals for the African-American community. One of their projects
was the installation of the Bench by the Road in downtown Cartersville.
